Location

Just 30 minutes from the city of Chetumal is THE MAGICAL TOWN OF BACALAR, a beautiful destination that highlights the beauty of its natural attractions.

BAKHALAL, as it was originally known, means “Place of Reeds”. It is located next to the Laguna de los Siete Colores, named for its different shades of blue, and which offers the ideal space to swim, dive, snorkel, kayak, paddle board or take boat rides and observe in all its splendor these beautiful natural colors.

Bacalar is a picturesque Magic Town where lovers of history, nature, adventure and cultural events find a perfect setting.

Fill yourself with energy with the majestic and unique Laguna de los Siete Colores, with its crystalline waters; Visit the Fort of San Felipe, the Parish of San Joaquín and many more corners.

Lagoon of 7 Colors

So called because its placid waters cover the entire possible range between turquoise blue and Prussian blue.

It is, in fact, the same miracle of hues as the Caribbean Sea, but inland, still surrounded by jungle.

It is no exaggeration to say that among the large bodies of water in Mexico, it is one of the most beautiful, or perhaps, the most beautiful of all.

FORT SAN FELIPE MUSEUM

Built by order of the Captain General of Yucatán, Antonio de Figueroa y Silva in 1733.

Its uniqueness is that it is located next to the Bacalar Lagoon and from the 4 bastions it has, you have a wonderful view.

You can find antique pieces such as; swords, rifles and navigation instruments such as compasses.

Location: Av. 3 between streets 20 and 22, Col. Centro.

Hours: Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

ARCHEOLOGY

This region has a rich Mayan history and culture, which is reflected in its impressive archaeological zones.

Some of the most notable are Chacchoben, Oxtankah, Dzibanché, Kinichná, Kohunlich, Calakmul (UNESCO Mixed World Heritage) and the most recently discovered Ichkabal.

BLUE CENOTE

Framed by beautiful and lush flora, it has a special charm.

With a depth of 90 meters, it receives its name due to the color of its waters.

On the shore is the restaurant of the same name, famous for its seafood and wild animal meats.

BACALAR ECOPARK

The tourist corridor consists of a wooden structure 800 meters long, which rises and crosses the perimeter of the ecological park starting from the mangrove towards the lagoon and allows you to walk for 200 meters over the beautiful lagoon, where visitors can learn about the ecosystem. of the mangrove and admire the lagoon of the seven colors.

On site you can also enjoy a quiet park with trails where you can admire wildlife.

It has a toilet service and information about the ecosystem and flora of the region.

TRADITIONS

Local traditions are mainly the patron saint festivals dedicated to San Joaquín that culminate with a spectacular walk to the saint through the Laguna de los Siete Colores; Rituals of Mayan origin are also preserved, such as the “Lol-Cah,” which is the ceremony where the people are blessed with Mayan prayers;

the planting of the Ceiba, sacred tree of the Mayans; The commemoration of “Hanal Pixan” (day of the faithful dead) and Carnival, among others, which include traditional dances such as “Los Chicleros”, “Sambay macho” and Caribbean dances.

HANDICRAFTS

Crafts in Bacalar are an expression of the culture and tradition of the region.

Some of the crafts that can be found are: palm weaving, basket weaving, wood and stone carving, hammock weaving, hand embroidery, dyeing of clothing with dyes from the bark of trees in the region, reed and vine figures.

In Bacalar you will also find pieces of art such as paintings in different techniques, sculptures, literature, poetry and music created by artists internationally recognized for their creations.

GASTRONOMY

The local gastronomy is shaped by the influence of ancient Mayan, Spanish and Caribbean cuisine. Dishes such as Cochinita Pibil, El Relleno Negro, Escabeche, Chocolomo, Queso Relleno, Puchero de tres carnes, Tamales Sotobichay with egg and chaya, espelón and Brazo de Reyna; Sea food such as tikinxic fish, ceviche, pineapple stuffed with seafood, among others;

and Caribbean dishes such as rice & beans, Fry Jacks, Carnes y Ribs Barbeques, queques, bunn bread and banana towers. Currently, the gastronomic offer has been enriched with the arrival of international and gourmet cuisine, which offers visitors a wide range of flavors and aromas to delight the palate.

STROMATOLITES

Stromatolites are rock formations that originate from the activity of bacteria that precipitate minerals in water. They are considered the oldest evidence of life on the planet, since they have existed for more than 3.5 billion years. Stromatolites produce oxygen and contribute to the biological diversity of aquatic ecosystems.

Bacalar is a Magical Town in Quintana Roo that is home to one of the largest stromatolite reefs in the world. Its famous Seven Colors Lagoon has an area where you can observe these natural wonders, especially in the “Cenote Cocalitos” and “Los Rápidos”. Swimming among the stromatolites is a unique experience, but you have to be careful not to damage them with physical contact.

LET'S CARE THE LAGOON

DO NOT touch or climb, anchor or sit on the stromatolites, They look like rocks but they are alive! They are part of the origin of life on the planet. Help us preserve them!!

DO NOT touch, cut or anchor in mangroves, They actively participate in the balance of this fragile and magical ecosystem.

Avoid making noise and high volumes of music, live in harmony respecting the bird sanctuary of this place.

Bring your cloth bag, refillable thermos and your own straws, and encourages others to do so, including local businesses.

DO NOT use sunscreen when swimming in the lagoon, even if it is biodegradable because it provides nutrients that accelerate eutrophication, one of the causes of the change in its colors. Protect yourself with swimming clothes and then sunbathe!!

DO NOT touch or remove the chivita snail from its environment, It is an essential part of the balance of the lagoon.

DO NOT use the lagoon as a bathroom, be careful to go before swimming.It is very important to take care of your health together.

Please pick up all the remains of your picnic, the lagoon does not eat Styrofoam or plastics either! And most importantly: do not leave toxic residues of ash or cigarette butts.
